Yarn ball wreath

June 29, 2021

This is a yarn ball wreath for a very special person. I made this for my grandmother who was moving into an assisted living facility. During the tour, I noticed everyone had beautiful wreaths on their door and she needed one too. She loves to crochet so I thought a yarn wreath would be perfect.

  • Step 1:
    • Wrap the wreath frame in yarn. You need a strong base and this helps to hide the wire.
  • Step 2:
    • Dab one of the foam balls in hot glue to secure the end of the yarn and wrap away! I randomly wrapped and moved the ball every 5 or 6 revolutions. When no foam is visible and the entire ball is wrapped in yard, secure the loose end with glue. You’ll need around 20-30 yarn balls. This is a great project while watching TV!
  • Step 3:
    • Place the yarn balls on the wreath and secure with hot glue. I alternated size and colors. Fill in any large hole with the smallest size balls.
  • Step 4:
    • If you want to include a potholder and a name, use the yarn needle to lightly stitch where each letter will go. Once I had a guide, I went back over the letters with yarn several times to make the lettering appear thicker and easier to read. I knotted each word in the back.
  • Step 5:
    • I hot glued the tiny decorative crocheted flowers to help hide any holes or places I may have missed when covering the yarn balls. I also hot glued the potholder and the crochet hooks to the front and tied a loop of yarn to the back of the wreath to attach it to an over-the-door wreath hanger. Done!
